Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular calls made by the official, following the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
