WHO Sounds Alert Over Critical Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Under one in 10 people that would benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy have access to them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its first guidance on the therapies.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide currently obese, it is calling for broader and more equitable access to this class of drugs.

Per forecasts, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our new guidance recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be managed with holistic and continuous treatment," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are significant hurdles to broad availability to the jabs that can help people shift significant body mass, says the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Even in the current most optimistic scenario, the supply of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, as stated by the health organization.

The recommendation encourages governments and firms to widen access, by strategies like patent sharing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is set to lapse in multiple nations in 2026.

How Obesity Injections Work

The injections replicate a biological compound to slow digestion, curb appetite and boost feelings of fullness so individuals reduce food intake.

Patients commonly see weight reduction within a few weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Research suggests users may regain a significant portion within a year of halting the drug, because their usual appetite come back.

Being overweight or obese elevates your chance for contracting health problems, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight impacts individuals in all nations and was linked to 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
