One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
