A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
