From Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.

“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.

Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure

However, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly behind the administration.

The release—originating from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.

Yet a few do not, including prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.

“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Issues Response

Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.

Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted

However, broader comment on the right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.

The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
