The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
